The Process of Battleship In 19th And 20th Century

The Process of Battleship
Every country wants to become the superpower of the world, and it all depends on the military strength. In the 19th century, the controlling force of the sea was extremely important to the race. And that's why British which were the leader of sea force started making Dreadnought.
The international battle ship arms-race began in 1890s, and Dreadnought was developed during that period. Dreadnoughts are a big jump in battle ship-arm, and they are extremely different from the previous battle ships. "All-big-gun" is one of Dreadnoughts' features. The previous battle ships have many different sizes of guns which included 12, 4.7 and 7.5 inches. But later "all-big-gun" was accomplished in Dreadnought because heavy guns offer advantages in both fire power and fire control. Propulsion of Dreadnoughts is also different from previous battle ships. Although the first generation of Dreadnoughts was propelled by steam engines which was used in the previous battle ship also, it changed into a geared turbine later because the battle ship propelled by a steam engine was very slow and not efficient(ship short range) at all. The fuel of Dreadnoughts reached a big improvement too. Previous battle ships were fueled by coals which had many disadvantages, such as labor-intense, inefficiency and production of black smoke which can give away the position of the fleet. So they changed they changed Dreadnoughts into oil-fired which can reduce smoke, make the ship less visible, no stoker, and more efficiency because of the high thermal content. The new battle ship Dreadnought is better, faster and stronger.

Criticism Makes Us Better
9:23 PM

Most people don't like to accept criticism and say they'll do better if there isn't any criticism because they feel embarrassed by criticism. But the truth is we must need criticism and it's the most efficient way to make us better. It's like awful medicines, but the patient must take those.
The criticism is like one measurement which can help people know how good he is and help him reach more improvements. Mr. Jobs who is one of the greatest inventors in this century likes criticizing a lot. He is either highly criticized own his own designs or his employs'. They did hundreds different designs before iPhone came out. He always criticizes his employs' designs extremely directly without euphemisms because he thinks it's the fastest way to improve the designs. Later, the success of iDevices proves the necessity of criticism. Great success needs great criticism, and the more criticism, the better it'll be.
Many people don't feel happy when they receive criticism, but they'll appreciate about that. They know the people who criticize them are trying to help them and make them reach more success. There is always a group of critics in American Idols which is a talent show and help people even more talented. People who go to the competition are extremely good at their areas, but no one is perfect. All of them need to fetch more improvements in some specific skills. And that's the reason why the critics are there. In other words, criticism does help people know better about themselves and become better.
People need criticism even they already reach great success because that's the way to become better and keep success. In Tang Dynasty, emperor Taizong who is one of the greatest emperors in China's history was eager for criticism. He was full of knowledge and wisdom, but he always asked for criticism for his deploys, especially Weizheng. Weizheng always criticized emperor Taizong directly without much euphemism, and makes the emperor Taizong embarrassed. However, emperor Taizong never punished him, but gave him higher officer instead because the emperor Taizong knew that good advice is harsh to the ear.
In conclusion, we need criticism and we need to know criticism is the most efficient way to make us better. Although criticism makes us embarrassed, but we'll feel extremely happy when we become better from criticism. It's time to wake up, and find the criticism of us now.
the Commons Sense Is Usually Wrong
8:34 PM
Unknown
Common sense should always be doubted by us. It's usually made up of some individuals for some specific goals because the individuals know common sense is the best way to make people credule and control them. The Nazis and Culture Revolution in China are proofs that the common sense is doubtful and harmful.
In the World War II, Nazis were very enthusiasm in the common sense that exterminated all the Jewish. They tried so hard to find every Jewish and put them in the camp. The Nazis got lots of ways to exterminate the Jewish, such as burn, drugs, gas and so on. The Nazis lost their minds, and they didn't regard the Jews as human beings or even lower than animals. They just tried to find the most horrible way and the fastest way to exterminate. Many Jews tried to escape from their claws. No one wanted to die there. But the common sense was totally wrong, it's crazy and relentless. No one has the rights to exterminate others, and the Jews didn't do anything wrong.
During 20th Century in China, China started a revolutionary wave called Culture Revolution. People in China who said anything good about capitalism and do something similar to capitalism would be regarded as renegades. It doesn't matter whether they're generals or poor kids. People would criticize them and put them in jail. Even He Long who is one of the most famous generals in China died in the Culture Revolution. The common sense was a big fault in the history. The chinese just followed the common sense without a thought. They should accept the new good things no matter where they came from.
In conclusion, common sense is usually wrong, and doubtful. As we all knew now, the common sense that the Nazis believed is from Hitler; the common sense in the Culture Revolution is from the mind of Mao. In other words, common sense is usually made from some ideas of individuals. But individuals can be wrong and doubtful whether they are great or not.
I Robbed the Woods Analysis

Poem 41
I robbed the Woods -- The trusting Woods. The unsuspecting Trees Brought out their Burs and mosses My fantasy to please. I scanned their trinkets curious -- I grasped -- I bore away -- What will the solemn Hemlock -- What will the Oak tree say?
Analysis:
Poem 41: The tone of this poem makes me feel sad because it shows a dark side most of us have. Woods in the forest stand for the good source most of us want. They are like money, entertainments, benefits and so on. We just know how to be selfish and rob those things from society or others. We don't know pay back because we are ungrateful. I also think it may tell us what the war is. This poem can be used to explain that the war is an action of the imperious countries who try to concur others and get as much "treasures" as they can.
When I Count the Seeds Analysis

Poem 40
When I count the seeds
That are sown beneath,
To bloom so, bye and bye –
That are sown beneath,
To bloom so, bye and bye –
When I con the people
Lain so low,
To be received as high –
Lain so low,
To be received as high –
When I believe the garden
Mortal shall not see –
Pick by faith its blossom
And avoid its Bee,
I can spare this summer, unreluctantly.
Mortal shall not see –
Pick by faith its blossom
And avoid its Bee,
I can spare this summer, unreluctantly.
Analysis:
Poem 40: The tone of this poem makes me feel generous and optimistic. This poem shows that the thoughts in our minds sometimes are different from realistic. I got it when I read the description of "seeds" and "people." Sometimes the things we think are beautiful will usually be ignored in the real world. Sometimes the things we don't like are usually admired by others. So, Dickinson thinks why don't we make our own world we like? She describes a very beautiful garden which will never be disappeared in her mind. Then she says: "I can spare this summer, unrelunctantly" because the summer doesn't matter to her. This poem tells me, when we make some challenges, we should stay strong in our mind and never give up.

Dickinson Poem Analysis

Nobody knows this little Rose -- It might a pilgrim be Did I not take it from the ways And lift it up to thee. Only a Bee will miss it -- Only a Butterfly, Hastening from far journey -- On its breast to lie -- Only a Bird will wonder -- Only a Breeze will sigh -- Ah Little Rose -- how easy For such as thee to die!
Poem 35: The tone of this poem is kind sad. And it’s ironic that Rose is very beautiful but doesn’t get any great attention except some bees, butterflies… But after the Rose was lifted by people and get admired from people, it would usually die soon. The Rose is symbolized many people, the whole life of the Rose is just like most of our life. Dickinson feels that the life of people is very short. One man fights for his success during most of his life, but he can just enjoy his success for very short time.
Poem 39
It did not surprise me—
So I said—or thought—
She will stir her pinions
And the nest forgot,
Traverse broader forests—
Build in gayer boughs,
Breathe in Ear more modern
God's old fashioned vows—
This was but a Birdling—
What and if it be
One within my bosom
Had departed me?
This was but a story—
What and if indeed
There were just such coffin
In the heart instead?
So I said—or thought—
She will stir her pinions
And the nest forgot,
Traverse broader forests—
Build in gayer boughs,
Breathe in Ear more modern
God's old fashioned vows—
This was but a Birdling—
What and if it be
One within my bosom
Had departed me?
This was but a story—
What and if indeed
There were just such coffin
In the heart instead?
Poem 39: The tone of this poem is sad neither. I think the bird in this poem is stand for a spouse or friend of someone. It describes that the spouse (friend) betrays this man, and looks for new spouse (friend). As she said” This was but a story”, it means the same thing happened before. The rebel left his previous spouse (friend) to the man. So the man doesn’t feel surprise when the “Bird” left him for a new “Host”. Although it didn’t surprise the man, the man still feels sad and can’t forget what happened to him. So he said” There were just such coffin in the heart instead”.

Poem 30:
Poem 31:
Poem 30: This poem shows a tone of optimistic and makes people feel energetic. Dickinson gives a compare of two different types version of thoughts in the same situation. Dickinson shows two different descriptions because of the different thoughts and attitude of them. The sailors say that the little boat gave up and gurgled down and down. But the angels say the little boat retrimmed its masts- redecked its sails and shot- exultant on. This is a epitome of challenges we met in our life. We can be very industrious and happy because of our thoughts although this challenge may seem terrible. But I don’t know why she wrote the first paragraph.
Poem 31: This poem’s tone is very interesting and romantic. This poem shows how a girl wants to get the attention of the man she loves. Summer can give people light and warm, so she wants to become the summer of that man. Music makes people relax and happy, so she also wants to become music around this man. Flowers are beautiful and are always admire and water by people, so she wants to become this man’s flower. Dickinson uses different characterization to show the relationship and thought of the girl and the man she love.

Report of Steel in Europe in 19th Century
Before the 19th century, people used wood to melt iron. But wood became scarce because a huge amount of people heat wood in the home and in some other places. Later, people found iron can be smelted by using coke. So coal is demanded for the steel industry. In 1805-1807, Murdock built a gas works supplying the cotton mill for illumination and this technology was used in smelting iron later. People tried to get as much coal as they can, so they went into deeper ground and exploit more coals. Steam engines played a big role in this process. It made this dream become possible. One other very important technology is compressed air to blast furnaces because it can make high quality of iron. There was a big change in the steel industry in 1855 that Englishman Henry Bessemer invented a new process for refining and mass producing steel. It can help makes things other than knife and similar articles. Many other industries grow quickly by the steel industry growth. The growth of the steel industry helped the architecture industry a lot. They could build a better bridge or buildings in a faster way. However, when the use of steel becomes more variety, people began to worry about the origin source of STEEL, such as coal, mine and iron. So they try to find concur other poor countries to get the resource they need. In other words, the growth of the steel industry is one the cause of wars in the 19th century.

Poem 25: I think this poem is about two friends separated for a long time. The tone of this poem makes me feel kind sad. The theme is about when Dickinson finds her good friend after a long time. When she gets closed to her, she couldn’t be recognized immediately by her because as time goes by, Dickinson became different from before. But she recognized Dickinson’s foot immediately because there are some special mark on her foot or the sound of the foot. I think Dickinson may try to explain time change a lot things but there are still something will never get changed as time fly.
Poem 27: This poem shows how Dickinson loves sun. Because at morn, she can’t see sun; she can see sun at the noon. At the beginning of sun’s rise, the light, location and size of sun always change. Later it will be firmer. Dickinson worries that the sun will leave her for the transport later as she said “She- was mute from transport- I from agony-” She regard the sun as linnet and when the evening gets closed, the linnet flew away. The tone of this poem is also kind sad because she can’t keep the sun forever.

I’m going to analysis poem 8 and 12 in my opinions.
Poem 8: After I read this poem, I felt Dickinson is very generous. Dickinson describes how generals she is by describing “forgot”. As she said it can bears a sword and pierce an armed man. When she is hurt by someone or something she isn’t very upset and tries to be generous and happy instead. The best way to accomplished this is trying to forget. I feel very energetic from this poem.
Poem 12: This poem shows how Dickinson loves autumn. We can know she is describing autumn from meeker morns, brown buts, fallen rose, maples and scarlet field. After she described autumn, she says she’ll put a trinket on. Dickinson shows her love in a lively and bright way. I can feel the love and happiness from the tone.

I’m going to analysis poem 2 and 5 in my opinions.
Poem 2: (There is Another Sky) This poem is about optimism. The “darkness” here means troubles and difficulties we met in our life. But if we are optimistic, we’ll never mind those darkness and go to see the other serene, fair sky and bright garden instead. We need to enjoy our life in a joyful way.
Poem 5: (I Have a Bird in Spring…) This poem is about optimism too. “Bird” is a metaphor which means her treasures. When her treasures have gone, she thinks they’ll come back to her again. She doesn’t need to worry those things which are not worth to worrying. All the things happened to her are natural logics. When bird is gone, the beautiful flowers Rose will appear. When Rose is gone, the bird will be back in spring. She regard everything she experienced is joyful and bright.

China’s Culture in Europe in 18 Century
In 18 Century, China was controlled by Qianlong Dynasty, and it’s a very prosperous time of China. Europe was very interested in China during that time and they were influenced by China in many areas, such like consumption, dress, literature, science and even education.
King Louis XIV admired China’s culture very much. And one day he hold a very fancy party, and he dressed China style clothes and sit down on a luxury Chinese chair. Everybody was very surprised by that. And this is just one part of the China fashion in Europe. King Louis XVI who likes China cultuer very much and sited in the China style chair with Chinese dress.
The missionaries in Europe who have been China brought lots of Chinese literature book to Europe. And they described China as a very great country. Matteo Ricci brought “The Four books” and “Five Classics” from China to Europe. And his “the Diary of Matteo Ricci” describes the thoughts of China’s morals and religions. People like Matteo Ricci introduced China’s culture and influences to Europe. Then a great fashion of “Chinoiserie” appeared later in Europe.
After the Great French Revolution, French brought China’s imperial examination system to their government and education because it can make poor people become nobles.
Experience in the Earthquake (Memory of Earthquake).
9:25 PM
Unknown
May 12th, 2008 was a tragic day for all the Chinese people. It was one of the heaviest earthquakes in China. The earthquake happened in the city I lived called Mianyang at 2:28pm. And the center of the earthquake is in the towns called Wenchuan and Beichuan in Mianyang. I'll never go to forget it.
I still feel so bad when I recall this history. I was a student in a boarding school. When the earthquake happened, I was washing my face before going to school. I never experienced an earthquake before. And when it happened, I just heard some noises "DONG, DONG, DONG…" from the flat in school. Then I felt the building was shaking, and it was very hard for me to stand. Later I heard that one of the teachers in the building yelled " It's an earthquake, get out here". Then I run as fast as I can with several friends out of the building. But when we got out of the building, we didn't know elsewhere to go. It was all buildings around us, and they seemed to almost fall down. After several seconds, we got the idea that we needed to go to the nearest and biggest playground around us. But there was a building between the playground and us. We were very afraid of that at first, but knew if we didn't across the building, we would die anyway when the building fell down. Then we hold our heads and crossed the building. It was very lucky, that although we felt many breaks fell to us, we didn't get heavy injured. When we got the playground, we found many school mates were there. Some were crying others swooned on the ground. And I could see the ground fracturing over there.
After I got back home, I knew that the earthquake was 8 magnitudes and the middle of the city wasn't destroyed heavily. The real disaster was happened around the city. After the earthquake happened several days later, I went to the real heavy disaster area with my father. I didn't see any building stood there on the way to the heavy disaster area Beichuan. I could see half of the mountain was green, and the other half is sand because of the collapse. I heard that one mountain was divided into several mountains, and several mountains mixed together one mountain. I can't imagine what would go to happen to those people who travel to the mountains and live in the mountains. The roads we drove were broken because of the stones and sands from the mountains. And we found that we could only get the boundary of the towns because there was no way to go there. There were only two ways can get there, one is from the sky, and the other one is the road were just built for rescue teams.
All the Chinese really wanted to do something for the people who were in trouble. I brought all my pin money to the Red Cross. Later, I went to the sanctuary in my city and help them carry food and water to the displaced person. Although I felt very tired I still keep carrying, and when the people asked, I said I'm fine. I saw the people from the disaster area were full of mud and scars. Bloody people were in the hospital or somewhere else for cures. I also saw a line of children who were also from the disaster area without their parents. They were so small and even didn't know what happened and if their parents were still alive. Compared with their pains I found my pains in school, family and anywhere else are really nothing. When I saw the news from TV, I found that lots of the people in the disaster area were covered by the building. They didn't have any food or water, the only thing they had is the desire to be alive for themselves and their families. Because of the desire, I saw many miracles happened.
Although it's a very big tragedy that more than 20,000 people died in the earthquake for all the human beings, it's a very good lesson to the people who are still alive as well. We have nothing to complain compared with them. And we need to keep the desire to be alive whatever happened to us. I'll never forget that day.
Compare "On the Road" with "the Bean Trees" (Summary)

Paragraph to question B:
Sal and Taylor are almost two totally different people except their similar principles. Both of their principles are live in themselves. They just want to find a way they enjoy living, they don’t want to be trammel and got something similar to the beginning (live for themselves).

(c) Value: Sal's value gets changed in the future and sometimes depends on his emotion. When he tries to sit on the banks of the Mississippi River and is stymied by a chain-link fence. There is also a darker side to its vastness which he acknowledges. To him, there seem to be two sides to everything. To him, west of America can be either filled spirit or emptiness. For example, On the one hand, he met his girl Terry. A pretty Hispanic worker Sal loves in California, on the other hand, the suburban teenagers that shout at her from their cars. At first, Sal thinks East is intellectual, but wrapped in the old and the west is open and new. But after he traveled across the West, he thinks the East is brown and holy, west is whitewashed, empty. But Taylor keeps her value all the time. She always thinks she is lucky that she doesn't have a father. So she doesn't want to be a pregnant or gets a father for her child (What she said was "Why not, my daddy'd been calling me a slut practically since I was thirteen, so why the hell not? Newt was just who it happened to be. You know the way it is." I told her I didn’t know, because I didn’t have a daddy. That I was lucky that way. She said yeah. The Bean Trees. Page 12.) She is very self-respectful and doesn't want to betray her friends. When she finds that she loves Esteven, she tries her best to get away from Esteven, although she wants to stay with Esteven forever. She just doesn't want to hurt her friends Esteven's wife. And she knows Esteven loves his wife very much and doesn't want to interrupt them.
(D) Relations: The relations always get change in Sal's story(From a quote: "I was beginning to get the bug like Dean. He was simply a youth tremendously excited with life, and though he was a con-man, he was only conning because he wanted so much to live and to get involved with people who would otherwise pay no attention to him."
- Jack Kerouac, On the Road, Ch. 1). They actually become real friends at the end. And at first, Sal can't live without Dean, even he knows that Dean is not really honest to him. In other words, Dean plays a very big part in Sal's life. There's also another part, that when Sal first finds Dean, he acknowledges that their old friends don't like Dean anymore. However, the relationship of Taylor doesn't change much. She has a very stable relationship with Lou Ann, Mattie and other friends. But her relationship with Esteven is kind special. She loves Esteven, but can't live with him because of her high self-control and morality. She doesn't want to hurt the relationship with Esperaanza either.
(E) To be honest, I admire Taylor more than Sal because she is altruistic and moral. When she meets problems she tries to solve them and her friends are her great supporters too. All of her friends who include her are just like rhizobia. They try to help each other and help the bean trees grow.
Is Advanced Placement "Worth It" For College Admissions?

Is Advanced Placement Worth It For College Admission?
Guidance counselors often encourage students to take AP classes. Are they right?
It's almost considered a truism: Advanced Placement courses and subject tests can only help you in your quest to enter the best colleges.
Not so fast. AP classes have advantages - but there are drawbacks as well.
The Positives of Advanced Placement
- Taking an AP class will usually get your GPA knocked upwards. Depending how your particular school rates them, AP classes can be worth a full grade more than their regular kin - that's how some students end up with GPAs greater than the theoretically-perfect 4.0. And even if your school doesn't inflate AP grades, many college admission offices will do it for you.
- Good AP scores can reduce your eventual college course load - and, potentially, your time in college. Generally speaking, a high score - at least three, but often a four or five out of the five-point Advance Placement test - will equate to one semester of the equivalent test. So, if you place out of four courses - you could skip out of an entire semester of college - saving up to $25,000! Even placing out of one or two classes can lead to a semester of part-time student status and, hence, significant savings.
- AP classes show initiative. By taking the more challenging path, schools know you aren't scared to push yourself. In addition, since AP classes are supposed to be college level, you are showing schools that you are fully capable of doing the necessary work.
- Your AP scores have zero bearing on your admissions. That's a whole lot of work that may not have much to do with which college you get into - especially if your colleges don't inflate grades according to the difficulty of courses.
- Not all colleges accept AP scores for course credit. If you wind up applying to schools that don't accept AP scores and don't bump up GPAs for AP classes, then you'll have done a lot of work for absolutely nothing.
- AP classes and study takes an inordinate amount of time. It isn't unusual to have two or three hours of homework out of an AP class. That's time you can't pursue other studies, can't devote to extracurriculars, and can't practice for the SAT - all things that definitely will help you get into college.
If you are most concerned with getting into the best colleges, AP courses aren't much help at all. If, however, you are confident you'll get in somewhere good, and want to roll the dice that they'll take AP credits and you can save by graduating early or as a part-time student, AP courses are worth their weight in gold.
As always, the answer depends on you. One thing is certain though - when deciding whether to pursue AP courses, at least find out how your favorite colleges deal with AP credits. If there's no hope of placing out, then it isn't worth your time.
To your family's successful college pursuits,

Summary of Exterminate All the Brutes
9:22 PM

I did this for my summer reading, and post this on my Student Clubs
Summary of Exterminate All the Brutes
Summary of Exterminate All the Brutes
Summary of the second chapter:
There are many things happened in the second chapter. I’m going to list three most relative and important things in this chapter.
The first one is about the main character Kurtz in Conrad's book, ‘the Heart of Darkness’. Kurtz resembles Stanley, who exterminates the brutes and became the idol. Just like other dictators, both have guns, which mean power, and they want to establish a new imperialism/colonialism. People in the ‘great human’s’ countries are very innocent, and they just believe what the dictators tell them the event it’s fake. Then the dictators get more and more supporters, and their ideas of establishing imperialism inflate. (P43)
The second one is that the improvements of guns. The guns get lots of improvements in 19th century. At the generation of guns, their range was only a hundred yards. And it took at least one minute to load the gun between each shot. But at the end of 19th century, it came out real good guns such as Gras rifle, and the Prussians with the Mauser. Those guns are called arms to the imperialism/colonialism. The most common thing to the imperialism/colonialism is that all of them got the arms and try to make it harder than anyone else. And whether they own the arm is also the difference between imperialism/colonialism. (P47-P50)
The last material is about the Battle of Omdurman. All the imperialisms/colonialisms don’t respect the ‘brutes’ because they think they’re brutes. But ‘brutes’ need respects, although they can be conquered and surrenders. Just like Somabulano said in his speech at the peace negotiations :”You came, you conquered…But the Children of Stars can never be dogs .”(P62) Then, it caused the conflict, and they will have a final battle just like the Battle of Omdurman. Although the ‘brutes’ can’t even get close and hurt the ‘great man,’ they’ll still fight back because they know ‘You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain’. No doubt hundreds of ‘brutes’ will die. It’s really an ironic that the imperialisms/colonialisms think they’re great humans, but they try their best to become the leader of the brutes.
Summary of the third chapter
They don’t know die, the quotes of Thomas, the level of people. The Origin of Species,
This chapter explains the Lindqvist’s experience and thoughts in the desert first. When he is desert, he realizes something was missing in his education. He never learned how to die. In other words, he didn’t really learn what the death is. Just like other normal people, they don’t really feel die, they don’t know if it’s happy or sad, relax or nervous, confortable or painful. They don’t really care about it. Why? Because they are the imperialisms/colonialisms, no one can hurt them. “Exterminate all the brutes” is just a great excuse to the imperialisms/colonialisms As Darwin’s research shown no one can exterminate any other species except the power from nature. As Tomas Jefferson said, “If one link in Nature’s chain be lost, another and another might be lost, till this whole system of things should vanish by piecemeal.” Those thoughts don’t work for imperialisms/colonialisms because all they need is a good excuse to get the profits.
Furthermore, are the people in Africa and other poor place real brutes? No, they are not brutes. There’s a very good example showing that why the ‘great human’ say they are brute. Cuvier is the Napoleon of French science, but for a man of such power, he was unusually skeptical of hierarchies. To him, the belief in a “ladder” of creatures was the greatest of all scientific mistakes. (P99) However, in his great sixteen-volume work “The Animal Kingdom” he divided human beings in to three races. He had forgotten that no hierarchies existed. (P99) The thought of Cuvier is just like any other dictators of imperialisms/colonialisms Once, when somebody hurts their profits, they try to prevent it. But when they have chances and power to deprive others’ profits, they’ll forget their own profits-protection thoughts and try to get the best excuse they can. So, those people are not brutes anymore. “Brutes” is only a call from imperialisms/colonialisms
