History Homework: Review Of "the Children of Huang Shi"

This movie tells people a story about a man called George Hogg, who is a reporter and helps the children build a new family in Huang Shi. This was a true story, and it happened in World War Two. The Japanese said they were trying to help China, and make China nicer, but in fact, they were trying to take over China. They are very rude to Chinese, especially in the Capital of China called Nanking.

Mr. Hogg wants to tell the world the truth about China, and he pretends a Red Cross supply group with his partner who also wants to go to the capital Nanking. After they get the passport, they start their journey. When Mr. Hogg arrives at Nanking, he found it’s totally a lie that the news outside China. The Japanese are very cruel to Chinese even the little kids. He sees the Japanese put all the Chinese together and kill all of them at one time by machine gun. And his partner is killed as well even he has the passport. Then he met the soldier in the Communist Party of China called Hansheng Chen and a nurse who helps Chinese children a lot. Mr. Hogg is sent to the place where the children live, and learn a lot new things from them. Because of the war, their place is taken over by the nationalist party. They must move to Huang Shi, which is far from there, but they have no choice either. Then the harder journey began. They need to overcome the nature challenge, their body health and Japanese as well. Unfortunately, Mr. Hogg is died because of the lockjaw. But he will never be forgotten by people. He lives in people’s memory.

This film’s background is really great and one of the greatest strengths in the film. The beginning is happened in Nanking, which is the capital of China that age and got a huge slaughter from Japan. It can show how rude the Japanese are and the strong reason of moving to Huang Shi. If the movie doesn’t have the background, it will make people feel it’s unbelievable and hard to understand. But after people know the background, they will believe the movie.

The other one of the film’s greatest strengths is the journey of moving to Huang Shi is very hard. If the journey is very easy, it will show nothing important, everyone can do it, nothing special. But the truth is the journey is very hard that even the tough soldiers can’t believe it. But they are brave to do it. And the leader of the children is Mr. Hogg, which is very brave and general. The hardship of the journey shows how great Mr. Hogg, and the children are.
I found the greatest weakness of the movie is how Ms. Wang trying to save Mr. Hogg’s life from the nationalist party. The officer of the nationalist is very ignorant and rude just like Japanese. He said Mr. Hogg is China’s enemy, and they need to put Mr. Hogg into the jail. It looks, he is a very great man. But finally, he releases Mr. Hogg because Ms. Wang promised to have sex with the officer. The officer is the real enemy of China. He is very awful that people can’t stand it.
One of the biggest biases in the movies is how Japanese treat Chinese. Japanese regard Chinese as animals, they don’t really care if Chinese are alive or dead, they just kill them when they want. They can destroy anything around Chinese, they want. They easily destroy the supplies from pure people.

The other part of the biases is that when Mr. Hogg first comes to the children how the children treat Mr. Hogg. The children think Mr. Hogg is the enemy who wants to take over their place subconsciously. All the children are hurt a lot form the foreigner enemy, it’s very hard for them to believe there is still any good foreigner wanting to help them. They beat Mr. Hogg, rude to Mr. Hogg and destroying Mr. Hogg’s achievement. It looks like a tragedy for people. But after Mr. Hogg showed his honest. The children begin to trust him and love him. This is a biases show how great Mr. Hogg is and how deeply the children are hurt by others.

I will strongly recommend this film to my friend who is looking forward to learning more about world war two. It’s a really good source to show what happened in China during the world war two, how rude the Japanese treat Chinese. Furthermore, this movie is not fiction. This movie is made from the truth. And the children of Huang Shi are still alive today. It’s a great believable movie as well.
